South Texas

Late winter – early spring I had the privilege to visit South Texas. The Rio Grande Valley is a birding mecca as Texas boasts over 600 + bird species, which is more than any of the other states in the lower 48. Texas is the largest of the lower 48 states, and we always hear that they go big in Texas, and that is true in the case of their birds as well. In addition to the largest number birds, they also boast that they have more than 300 butterfly species, as well as more than100 dragonflies and damselflies. There is definitely no shortage of photographic opportunities in this state.

I spent a little time on both the coast and inland, which provided me with a good look at the diverse bird population that Texas has. The Rio Grande Valley has more than 30 species that are unique to that border state. We spent a couple of days on South Padre Island, and within two days, we had counted nearly 100 species, which was exciting to see in such a compact amount of time.  If you have done any amount of bird photography, you know that there is a big difference in seeing nearly 100 species vs photographing 100 species. I was not lucky enough to capture 100 species on film, but we got some truly great images. I also saw a peregrine falcon along with several other raptors, waders, waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines. Thanks for visiting my website … I hope that you have enjoyed your visit , and I hope you return real soon. In the meantime, I invite you to follow me on Instagram.
